Strengthening food and nutrition security in the Matam region
Funded by the European Union Emergency Trust Fund for Africa and implemented by the Agency for Technical Co-operation and Development (ACTED), the project helped strengthen access, availability and diversity of food in rural areas in the Matam region in northeast Senegal. The project closely linked agriculture and nutrition based on three focus areas: 1) increasing availability and improving access to food; 2) support for local village initiatives aimed at increasing the availability of nutritious food in the intervention area; and 3) diet diversification of very poor households. The contributed to developing knowledge and good nutrition practices. Women were the main beneficiaries in the development of household gardening and awareness-raising activities; their involvement was required in the selected village initiatives. The National Agricultural and Rural Advisory Agency (ANCAR) and the Regional Directorate of Rural Development (DRDR) were the main stakeholders at the institutional level.
