Markets update during COVID-19 pandemic
Published : April 2020
This briefing note, produced by the WFP Regional Office in Dakar, analyses the market environment in the region. All Sahelian and West African countries affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, have implemented social distancing measures. In March, the impacts of these measures were relatively light in countries where markets were functioning well before the crisis. On the other hand, countries in which markets’ situation was already fragile (The Gambia, Liberia, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal and Sierra Leone) could face further deteriorations (supply chain disruptions and price increases). In several of these countries non-seasonal price increases of 10% to 20% have already been recorded in monthly variations for food products
