Funded by the European Union Emergency Trust Fund for Africa and several members of the Sahel Alliance (Denmark, Germany), the Emergency programme for the stabilisation of G5 Sahel border areas (PDU) provides substantive support for vulnerable populations in border areas of the five G5 Sahel countries: Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger. It is a direct response to the request of the G5 Sahel Heads of State and government, developed jointly by the G5 Sahel Permanent Secretariat and members of the Sahel Alliance, in the face of insecurity and the vulnerability of populations. The action aims to support vulnerable populations and social cohesion, in particular by improving access to water in the most fragile regions while facilitating the resolution of natural resource conflicts. Particular attention is paid to gender aspects, in particular by taking into account women in the identification phases of project sites, and gender aspects in the choice of locations for water standpipes, in terms of operation, pricing and management structures. An effective representation of women in water management bodies will be required. Several members of the Sahel Alliance (AFD, GIZ, LuxDev and the Center for Humanitarian Dialogue) are in charge of implementing the programme.
