Food and nutrition crisis 2023

The Cadre harmonisé estimates that 42.5 million people in the Sahel and West Africa will require emergency food and nutrition assistance in June-August 2023 if appropriate action is not taken. The region is now facing a multidimensional crisis exacerbated by conflict, climatic shocks and rising food prices.

Agro-pastoral situation

Cereal production for the 2022-2023 agropastoral season, estimated at over 77 million tonnes, is 6% up on the average for the last five years and 8% up on last year. However, per capita production is down 2% on the average for the last five years in the Sahel and Gulf of Guinea countries. Tuber and root crop production is estimated at 212 million tonnes, up 10% on the five-year average and 3% on last year. Cash crop production is also up, except for cotton, which is down 12% on last year. Fodder availability and livestock watering conditions are relatively satisfactory. However, in some areas, access remains restricted by insecurity, and the limitation or even prohibition of transhumance in certain countries.

Food and nutrition situation

Some 29.5 million people are in need of emergency food and nutritional assistance. If appropriate measures are not taken, 42.5 million people could be affected by the crisis by the lean season in June-August 2023. In addition, 107.5 million people, currently under food pressure, could tip over into crisis in the absence of appropriate measures, notably in Nigeria (64 million), Niger (7.3 million) and Burkina Faso (5.1 million). The nutritional crisis also persists in Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania, Niger and Chad, where almost 16.5 million children under the age of five are suffering from acute malnutrition.
